Lesbian Gay Bisexual Or Transgender Clients in Wyoming

None of the special populations in Wyoming have more significant involvement with substance abuse and dependence rates than the LGBT population. Several studies have estimated that substance abuse affects 28-35% of the LGBT population.

It is also estimated that substance abuse affects 10- 12% of the general population. It has to be said though, that society's negative view on homosexuality contributes to a lack of research and an overall lack of representative samples of the LGBT population.

Addiction among LGBT Clients

LGBT individuals encompass all races and ethnicities, religions, and social classes. Sexual orientation and gender identity questions are not asked on most national or State surveys, making it difficult to estimate the number of LGBT individuals and their health needs.

Research suggests that LGBT individuals face health disparities linked to societal stigma, discrimination, and denial of their civil and human rights. Discrimination against LGBT persons has been associated with high rates of psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, and suicide. Experiences of violence and victimization are frequent for LGBT individuals, and have long-lasting effects on the individual and the community. Personal, family, and social acceptance of sexual orientation and gender identity affects the mental health and personal safety of LGBT individuals.

LGBT health in Wyoming encourages specific attention from health care and public health professionals to address a number of disparities, including:

Alcohol Use and Abuse among LGBT Persons

Alcohol use is ever-present in the lives of many LGBTQ+ individuals because of its prevalence in the social settings they frequent. The 2016 SAMHSA report found that past-month drinking rates were higher among gay, lesbian and bisexual adults (63.6 percent) than among heterosexual adults (56.2 percent). Gay or bisexual women were much more likely than heterosexual women to engage in alcohol use, binge drinking and heavy drinking.

According to a separate SAMHSA report, LGBTQ+ people are less likely to abstain from drugs and alcohol and are more likely to indulge in long-term heavy drinking. Numerous studies have found that lesbians were more likely to drink heavily than their heterosexual counterparts, according to SAMHSA. The agency also noted that bisexual women report more hazardous drinking than lesbians or heterosexual women.
