Long Term Drug Rehab

If you have been diagnosed with a substance use disorder, you might want to seek help from an addiction treatment program. There are two types of these programs - short and long term drug rehab programs.

Understanding Long Term Drug Rehab

Long term drug rehab - also known as long term inpatient or residential rehab - is a type of addiction treatment that will typically place for 3 to 12 months. Most of these programs are offered on an inpatient basis.

While enrolled in such a program, you will live at the treatment facility so that you can receive round the clock care. During the first few stages of your recovery, you will be monitored closely as you go through detoxification. This is to ensure that you do not suffer too much from the withdrawal symptoms that arise when you stop abusing drugs or alcohol.

While in the program, you will receive a long term treatment and recovery plan that will evolve during your stay. You can also start working towards create an aftercare and relapse prevention plan towards the end of your stay at the center.

Although 3 to 6 months is the typical duration of these programs, some facilities offer longer programs. For this reason, you might end up spending about a year or even longer in such a program.

Who Needs Long Term Drug Rehab?

According to NIDA - the National Institute on Drug Abuse - almost everyone who is struggling with substance abuse and addiction would benefit from a long term drug rehab program. This is because the duration of time you spend in such a program would be enough to ensure that you work through all your drug and alcohol related issues.

However, long term treatment might be more ideal if you have been diagnosed with a severe substance use disorder that has been going on for a long period of time. It would also work well if you have presented with the signs and symptoms of another co-occurring mental health or medical disorder - such as anxiety or depression.

How It Works

Most long term drug rehab programs will start your treatment plan with a medically managed detoxification process. This process will take anywhere between 10 days and 30 days. The goal of detox would be to manage any withdrawal symptoms and drug and alcohol cravings that arise during the first few days or weeks of your recovery.

After that, the program will adjust the services that you receive so that you start benefiting from counseling and therapy. This could involve the use of evidence based treatment modalities, such as group therapy, individual therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, couples counseling, and family therapy - among others.

Some programs can also offer alternative or complementary therapy options, including but not limited to equine therapy, art therapy, massage therapy, yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and traditional Chinese medicine.

Getting Help

Over the course of your addiction treatment at a long term drug rehab program, you will get the help that you need to overcome your substance abuse and addiction. These programs can also offer you additional services to ensure that you maintain your sobriety in the long term even after you have checked out of the treatment facility. For instance, they can link you further addiction resources, like support groups and relapse prevention programs.
