New Center for Latino Mental Health at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology Addresses Growing Need for Psychology in the Service of Latino Communities

The Chicago School of Professional Psychology has established a new Center for Latino Mental Health. The center will work with the school to create academic programs centered on Latino mental health; will operate a research lab to advance the knowledge base of mental disorders among the Latino population; and will serve as a hub for students and faculty to collaborate with organizations that serve Latino communities.

Ken Martinez, Mental Health Resource Specialist with the TA Partnership, provided an overview and facilitated discussion on empirically supported treatments, interventions and practices. Participants attained an increased understanding of the basis for these terms, the implications for cultural competence, and considerations for implementation with Latino populations.

Mission Statement:
The Latino Learning Community (LLC) provides a forum for System of Care initiatives to collaborate, exchange knowledge and share best practices to advance the development of culturally and linguistically competent mental health systems for Latino children, youth and families. The LLC supports System of Care communities and their partners by providing networking opportunities for those interested in improving the quality of life of Latino children, youth and their families; collaborating with affiliate organizations (such as the National Latino Behavioral Health Association (NLBHA), The National Alliance of Multi-Ethnic Behavioral Health Associations (NAMBHA), Florida Mental Health Institute, etc.) to increase knowledge around practices that have been demonstrated to work with Latinos, such as practice based evidence (PBE) and community defined evidence (CDE); and serve as a information referral source for various issues affecting Latino children, youth and families in System of Care.
