Juvenile Justice & Mental Health Working Together for the Best Outcomes for Youth With Serious Emotional Disorders

This guide is intended for family members, non-clinical juvenile justice practitioners, and administrators, as well as other stakeholders in system of care communities who are interested in improving mental health service delivery to all children with serious emotional disorders, including those in the juvenile justice system.

The guide provides an overview of some of the mental health issues facing many of the children and adolescents in the juvenile justice population. It presents how incarceration is used as a frequent response to juvenile crime associated with existing mental health problems among youth. This guide presents information on the prevalence of mental health disorders in the juvenile justice
population and information on screening and assessment. Also included throughout the guide are reflective questions to facilitate the use of the information.
