"A 2004 comprehensive evaluation of the effectiveness of anti-bullying programs in schools around the world (Bullying in Schools: How Successful Can Interventions Be? edited by Peter K. Smith, Debra Pepler, and Ken Rigby) found that achievements [in effectively minimizing bullying] so far have been modest at best. In some cases, the interventions have been totally unsuccessful. Why have anti-bullying programs met with so little success?" To take a look at the reasons suggested by Ken Rigby, Ph.D. and Bruce Johnson, Ph.D, take a look at the following article from the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California at Berkeley:

The ABCs of Bullying Prevention
: Cyberbullying
"Cyberbullying is a new and growing form of bullying that has emerged with the advent of technology. It involves sending offensive, humiliating, or threatening messages or images through a computer or cell phone. It is most often seen with middle- and high-school students, although elementary-school students also have engaged in this high-tech form of bullying or been its victims." Schools endeavor to fight against bullying

"In Oceanside and across Long Island, schools boast of programs to teach tolerance and character education, starting as early as kindergarten. But parents and educators agree that taunting and beatings persist because of factors inside and outside of the classroom." To read about the struggles of one student, his family, and his school system to overcome bullying, take a look at the following article from Newsday.com:

Teaching Bullies a Lesson

Sandra G. Boodman, Washington Post, June 5, 2001

A few years ago this counseling session would have been unimaginable at Liberty Middle School -- or at virtually any other American school, for that matter. That was before the administration declared war on bullying behavior. In late 1982, a newspaper reported that three 10-14 year old boys from the northern part of Norway committed suicide as a consequence of severe bullying by peers. This event eventually resulted in a nationwide campaign against bully/victim problems in Norwegian primary and junior high schools, launched by the Ministry of Education in the fall of 1983. This successful Bullying Prevention Program was developed, refined, and systematically evaluated in an intervention project in Norway and has been implemented and adapted in the United States.
