Early Childhood Community of Practice Planning Call
September 21, 2006
The Early Childhood Community of Practice Team (Roxane, Neal and Ken) met on September 21, 2006 to plan activities for the EC-COP. We covered several topics and we want to share our thoughts, suggestions and plans.
Training Institutes Networking Meeting
Thanks to all of you for your participation at the Georgetown National Technical Assistance Center Training Institutes Early Childhood Networking Meetings. The notes from those meetings have been posted on the Early Childhood webpage: http://www.tapartnership.org/Earlychildhood/Institutes_meeting.asp
National Meeting in Atlanta
First, we know that you would like to have an “EC Track” at the national meeting(s), the first one being in Atlanta, January 30-February 1, 2007. As you know deadlines for proposals has passed, but if you haven’t submitted one for your community or in groups, we suggest that you still submit, even if you do not have bios ready. We would like for you to consider pairing up as communities to present on EC topics. This will mean some quick networking, but at least there will be placeholders for EC topics.
Another suggestion is that we have learning communities for those in specific roles within the EC communities. For example, the EC evaluation teams have met regularly by conference call and that effort has been very successful. Another suggestion is to form a learning community of Early Childhood Youth Coordinators. What do you think?
Monthly Conference Calls
We are going to resume our monthly conference calls in October. We have had our calls on Tuesdays or Thursdays, 2:30-4 pm Eastern Time. I recall that one of those two days is better than the other. Please let us know which day is preferable. Instead of burdening all listserv subscribers with that level of detail, please email Ken directly with your preference and do not press “reply” or “reply all” to this email to respond to this particular question. The email address is: kmartinez@air.org
The format we will be using for the next few months will be that we will ask for 2 volunteer communities to co-present in one month (beginning in October) on issues that you have encountered, barriers, strategies to overcome them, successes, continued challenges. Each community will have a different set although there will be common issues across communities. The following month will be a call to follow up on content/needed resources that were identified in the previous month’s call.
We will begin our series with Sarasota, Florida and Multnomah County, Oregon (if they are able to do it). Each community will present for about 20 minutes and the rest of the call will be a facilitated discussion on the issues raised and questions asked.
We will let you know whether the calls will be on Tuesday or Thursday based on the results of your quick feedback and then we will put out a schedule for the next six months with call in information.
Role of Youth and Youth Coordinators in Early Childhood Communities
We just completed our fourth and last Regional Meeting in Buffalo. Over the course of the four meetings, we have gathered your thoughts and ideas about the role of youth and youth coordinators in EC Communities. We will be compiling the information we have gathered and posting it on the website soon. Recommendations will be forwarded to Gary Blau.
EC Webpage
We would like to keep the EC webpage current and useful. Therefore, we would like to ask you to send us new resources that you develop or run across to share with others. Please send them to Ken at the email address above. Rachel Freed, our former webmaster, has moved on to graduate school in psychology. We wish her well and thank her for wonderful work with us. Our new webmaster is Nick Read. If you have any issues with the webpage please email Nick at nread@air.org and Ken.
Partnering with other early childhood serving agencies and organizations
We would like to continue to partner with other early childhood serving agencies and organizations. Therefore as we grow and progress, we will continue to include them in our conference calls, resources, listserv, webpage, etc. Our newest partner is Isadora Hare M.S.W., L.C.S.W, Perinatal Health Specialist, Division of Healthy Start and Perinatal Services, Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration. She will be discussing with us the partnerships that are possible with the State Grants for Perinatal Depression: Services for Maternal and Infant Mental Health grantees that will be announced in the next few days.
Thanks for your continued participation on the EC COP,
Ken, Roxane and Neal
