Assets-Based Approaches

April 20, 2010

In this Webinar, the presenters discussed a monograph on asset-based research and a public health approach for addressing the needs of youth who are LGBTQI2-S and their families. Much of the research about these youth has been deficit- and problem-based, emphasizing suicide, HIV/AIDS, alcohol and substance abuse, and homelessness. The presenters shared a positive and strengths-based framework for communities, which emphasizes approaches grounded in assets-based research (e.g., resiliency, social support models, cultural competence capacity models).

Understanding the Health and Wellness Needs of Two-Spirit Youth and the Provision of Care Within Systems of Care

December 18, 2009

This call focused on children and youth who are two-spirit, which is an “umbrella” term created in 1990 to describe the many culturally and linguistically specific (contemporary and historical) terms for Native Americans who don’t fit the “typical” male/female or “heterosexual” identity within Native cultures. The presenters discussed more about two-spirit identity, including both historic and contemporary two-spirit individuals and communities.  They also talked about experiences two-spirit youth have in mental health and wellness services, and how providers can create welcoming spaces for these youth.
