Mission Statement
The African Heritage Learning Community (AHLC) is organized to support the provision of culturally and linguistically competent (CLC) services, including evidence-based and best practices, along with the opportunity for networking and peer support. The overarching goal is to reduce disparities and contribute to improving outcomes for children, youth, and families within systems of care.

Moving Beyond Survival Mode
This MEE Productions Inc. documentary focuses on the stresses and challenges African American families living in poor and at-risk communities face daily, along with the huge and growing need for stronger mental wellness support systems.
The documentary, based on a national research project on the state of mind and mental health of low-income African Americans, focuses on a range of issues, including interpersonal relationships, the ability to focus in school or at work and life choices. The documentary will be released to the public in mid-March 2010.
CNN Special Report: Black in America
Three-part special report by Soledad O'Brien investigates the King assassination, the state of black men in America, and the varied experiences of black women and families. The series explores several controversial topics, including single parenthood; racial disparities in educational, career, and financial achievement; rates of black male incarceration; and the toll of HIV/AIDS.
SAMHSA and Ad Council to Launch Mental Health Campaign for the African American Community
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), working in collaboration with the Ad Council and the Stay Strong Foundation, have announced the launch of a national public service advertising (PSA) campaign. Created pro bono by Grey Worldwide through the Ad Council, the campaign aims to promote acceptance of mental health problems within the African American community by encouraging, educating and inspiring young adults to step up and talk openly about mental health problems. The PSAs direct audiences to visit a new website, www.storiesthatheal.samhsa.gov, where they can learn more about mental health problems and how to get involved.
